THE WEATHER.

The " Lyttelton Times " correspondent at Peel Forest writes: —Since I wrote last we have 'had'brilliant sunshine, but very hard frosts, and our roads have 'been like glass, and quite unsafe to travel on. Creeks and water-racea were frozen hard enough to carry horses and buggies. A steep, long cutting an the forest was a sheet of ice, and Mr Tiney's waggon, Avith a load of hay, got control of the 'horses and went full tilt for some twenty chains, capsizing on the flat at the bottom.. Luckily not a strap nor » bolt was broken, nor were the horses hurt. Severe frosts since Sunday's thaw haverestored the ice oa the Saltwater Oeek, Timaru, and many skaters are enjoying that favourite pastime. Some continue it far into the night, carrying lanterns to show where they ars going. Only a portion of the creek, shaded from the sun by Mfrjx ivmksjs is safe.
