COUNTY COUNCILS.
SELWYN. A special meeting of 'the Selwyn County Council was held on. Wednesday morning, for., the. purpose of considering in detail the proposals embodied in the •" Local. Aiitjh-o-rities Bill, 1901." ' There- were present —Messrs R. Westenra, (chairman), J. G.. Murray, J. Rennie, J. Wolfe, G. H. M'Haffie, J, Gough and J. Witty. The meeting ■con. fined itself, to discussing the various suggestions made by individual members, arid ultimately a draft of these was agreed upon for submission to Mr M'Haffie, who, as delegate from the Selwyn Council will attend the Conference of County Councils at Wellington on July 16, CERALDINE. The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council Was held yesterday; present—Messrs J. Talbot (chairman), G. J. Dennistbun, B. R. M'Donald, M'Caskill, A. Kelroan 'and Dr Hislop. The Chairman explained that the meeting was called, a week earlier than usual on account of his having to leave next week for the conference of County. Councils at Wellington. A deputation consisting of Major Wright >M;d Messrs De Renzy and Hawke, waited on the Council with a resolution from a meeting of ratepayers held at'Winchester, asking the Council to proceed with the erection of the proposed traffic bridge' at Toomey's Crossing over the Hai3 j bae te Moana River. They also presented a petition signed by a number of ratepayers interested in Toomey's site, and a list of names of persons who had carted grain to Winchester Station last year, the number being forty-nine. The Chairman stated that the Government had. replied to the Council's letter that the proposal to erect the bridge at Speechlsy's Crossing instead of Toomey's, was being inquired into, and when particulars were to hand the Council would be further communicated with. The Department also replied thai the Government intended to ask Parliament for a further grant of £3OO towards the cost-of ■ the bridge, making it £6OO in all; but they could not promise to pay the Council any further sum than £3O already granted, until Parliament authorised it. It was resolved that pending a definite reply from the Government as to change of site if desircd, the further consideration of the creation should be postponed. The various Water-race Committees reported everything in good order in the races. The Mount Peel Road Board 'wrote, in regard to the request of the Raincliff ratepayers to have Rabcliff, AUandale, Sherwood Down* and Clayton' districts separated from the Road district and attached' to the Mackenzie County, that, as there was only a bare quorum at the Board's meeting they could not. give an opinion on the matter, and asked that the matter should be left over till the new Local Bodies' Bill is before Parliament. Accounts amount>g to £425 17s lOd were passed for payment. The Council then rose.
