The new schooner, Countess of Ranfurly, built by Lane and Brown, Whangaroa, to order of the New -Zealand Government, for the Cook Island trade, was launched to-day and taken in 'tow by the tug boat** Admiral. The vessel should arrive here to-mocrow. The Auckland Harbour Board has just had erected above the Harbour Board buildings a new. time ball to indicate to the shipping in the port th* correct time at noon., The ball is 3ft 6in in diameter, made of "wooden stays', covered with' black canvas, and mounted on a staff which raises it about 40ft above the roof. > The weight of the ball is 301bs, and it has a drop of 17ft,.the force of the fall being broken by a couple of spiral springs. ■Mr Madill's large barn, stables and cowshed combined, at Tuafcau, were totally destroyed by fire last night, also contents, consisting of produoe, some impliments, a baggy and harness, and other things. The building was insured, but there was no ineimvuce on the- content*.
