A LANDMARK REMOVED
The three shops which have recently been occupied by Messrs T. Taylor (grocer), Jones and Sons (Jewellers), and Rayner Bros, (bootmakers), in Cashel Street, were sold yesterday for immediate removal by Messrs Tonks, Norton and Co., acting under instructions ’ from •Mr H. Harris, who has the freehold of this site. These three shops' were built in 1862 by Mr H. Packer, who tori purchased the ground on which the first brewery ever established to Christchurch was built. This was erected by Mr Packer in the early sixties, and he first leased it to Mr G. Willmer, then to Mr T. B. Craig, and subsequently to Messrs Horace S. Brown and Co. It Was known as the Albion Brewery. In 1862 Mr Packer, who had reserved the frontage on Cashel Street, erected the three shops now being removed, and leased them to the late Mr Andrew Duncan (seedsman), and* Mr Robert Sutherland (grocer), the latter of whom is still a resident of Christchurch, and who occupied the buildings recently _ used by Messrs Bayner and Jones, which were the leading prevision stores in the city for many years. In 1864 the brewery was removed to Addington, as the Cashel Street site was too cramped for the business being done by Messrs H. S. Brown and Co., and the'back premises to Messrs A. Duncan’s and R. Sutherland’s shops were considerably enlarged. Building at that time was exceedingly expensive, and the shops, which were erected at a cost of several hundreds of pounds, were yesterday sold for £94. It is Mi* Harris’s intention to erect a handsome block of buildings in brick and stone in their stead.
