PROVISION TOR WHARF LABOURERS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As a Lyttelton wharf labourer, would you kindly permit me to draw the attention of Mr Laurenson, the Mayor, and others in a position to help, to what is really a great need? Many of us live far up the hill, so we have to bring our dinner with us, during this cold weather, and: sit in any convenient shelter to tat it cold. The hundred) or so coming from Christchurch, Woolston and Heathcote Valley are similarly situated. The one shelter shed will only accommodate about fifty. What we want is someone to provide for all who needl it—a good bowl of soup, or cup of tea or coffee—for which wa are willing to pay a fair price. It Would save many a score from being run up in the hotels, and be a comfort to many not included in the above. A lean-to added to the present shelter shed would make a cooking-galley. The rest is a matter of detail.—l am, etc., ANCIENT MARINER. Lyttelton, June 20, 1901.
