FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR S. GARFORTH.

The very large and representative gathering of his friends at Spreydon Lodge, Lincoln Road, yesterday afternoon, testified to the general esteem in Which the late Mr Garforth Was held.. The cortege reached from the Halswell Churdh gate to the gum trees facing the turn in the Lincoln Read in front of Mount Magd-a-ia Asylum, while the foot-path was used by a large number of pedestrians, and the villagers assembled at 'the lych gate to the number of over fifty. The weather was perfect, and the hand tome, polished, rimu, silver-mounted coffin on Messrs Lamb and Sons’ open car was - almost hidden with the wreaths which were hung round it on every side, and heaped on the coffin. The ceremony at the- grave was performed by -flie Rev H. Williams, vicar of Lin-colii-cum-Ha-lswell.

Rule, Rev Mother (Mount Magdala), Mr A. Robinson, Mrs Bamfield, Mrs Feather, Mr and Mrs W. B. Clarkson, Christchurch Meat Company, Captain Mather, Messrs J., Alex and W. Henderson, Halswell Road Board, Mr and Mrs Waymouth, Mr Meddings, Mr and Mrs Pidgedii, Employees at Belfast of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company (four different sections, a wreath each), the- Strathmore Hos•pital, Canterbury Jockey Club, Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Mr John Ferguson, Mrs Aitkeii, Mr W. Carter, Mr B. W. Glass, Mr F. W. Hunnibell, Mr F. Hopkins, Mr and Mrs Ales Duncan, Misses Mabel and Ethel Tayler, Mr W. Smithson, Mr J. Haydon and family, Mr and Mrs W. Birdling, Mr and Mrs Streeter, Mr and Mrs A. C. Wilson, Mr and Mrs J, Green, Mr and- Mrs Polhill, and many' others handed in at the oeme-tery. The pall-bearers were the employees of the deceased on his farm-, viz., Messrs W. Carter, C. Fantham-,. H. Newton and P. Huram.

The first two carriages contained the Misses Garforth (5), who were followed by Messrs W. Chrystall (chairman), J. T. Ford and J. Deans, co-directors with the deceased in the Canterbury Frozen ‘Meat and Dairy Produce Company, and Mr F. Waymouth (secretary); Mr F. A. Archer (president), ‘Dr Levinge (vice-presi-dent), Messrs B. G. Staveley, J. Anderson, H. W. Overton, W. Henderson end J. T, Ford (ex-presidents), and Mr O. B. Pemberton (secretary), represented the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association; Messrs N. L. M’Beth, F. S. Candy,.. E. H. Hughes, H. Dal try,. A. B. Cooper and A. Sims represented the office staff of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, and eadh Of the heads of the four departments at the Belfast Factory was present, besides quite a number of the employees themselves.
