LAUNCHING A BATTLESHIP. ,' THE GREAT OHIO. * ■ [Per Press Association.] (Per R.M.S. Mariposa, ad Auckland.) - SAN FRANCISCO, May 30. The launching of the battleship" Ohio was a notable event. The vessel is one. of the three largest m the American Navy. The New Maine and the Missouri are sister ships of equal size and power. They will ' ba in every essential —size, power, weight' of metal thrown, destroying power of th« ' guns, and speed, in class, armour,"and appliancss, equal to any of the world's battleships. The Ohio is forty feet longer over all than the Oregon, and has 1000 tons', • greater displacement. The Spanish wai proved to naval experts the uselessness oi '- an enormously large gun calibre, and pound r. for pound, the six and twelve inch guns of the Ohio are expected to excel the eight and thirteen inch guns of the lowa and ■tine Oregon. ;• The Ohio and her class are the first battleships of the American Navy in which 'water-tube boilers are provided. The com -~ struction of the Ohio and her class was au« thorised by Congress in 18ad, at a contract "-■ price of about £580,000 for hull and ma- . . chines. . She will.be ready for service in ; about a year.
