THE AUCTIONEERS’ SPORTS ASSOCIATION.
Th© first annual meeting of the Canterbury Stock Auctioneers’ and Dealers* Sports Aissooiation was held on Saturday evening, in te® Clarendon Hotel. There was a largo attendance. Mr W. B. Clarkson, the president, who was in the chair, said the forming of the Association had proved a step in tee right direction. The great success which had attended their efforts at the outset, when ‘ uiey had raised the substantial sum of £757 for the support of tee widow of the late Mr A. E. Cooke, on© of th© promoters of the Association, spoke volumes for the harmony of action which had characterised the work of the Association. Mr C. F. OederwaJi, honorary secretary, submitted a report'*of the year’s doings, showing that since the first bicycle races, for which good prizes had been awarded, they had held three smiok© concerts, one a farewell to Mr A. Stark, a member of the committee, on his trip to the Old Country, besides several cricket and football matches, all of which had been highly enjoyable and productive of much good fellowship. Mention was made of the loss by death of Messns F. C. Tabart and A. E. Cooke, and the fund raised for the widow of the latter had been vested in three. trustees, Messrs F, H. Pyn©,, F. A. Archer and J. Grierson, and' yielded a sum of £4O a year, capable of being augmented to £SO, if tee trustees saw fit. Every subscription promised had been paid, with on© exception, and the funds showed a credit of £4 8s fid over ex-, penditure. Mr W. W. Morton, honorary treasurer, submitted his report, which snowed teat, independent of the Cooke memorial, the receipts had been, from all sources, £B7 13s, and the expenditure £B3 4s 7-d. The report and balance-sheet were adopted.
The election of officers resulted as fol-lows:—-Patron, Mr G. E. Rhodes; president, Mr W. B. Clarkson; vice-presidents, Messrs A. Boyle, F. H. Pyne, Colin Stewart, L. Matson, R. Latter, E. Clarkson, J. B. Reid, L. 0. Gardner, G. AUispn, E. G. Staveley, J. J. Isbister, W. Buss, R. Friedlander, Gilbert Anderson, W. Wood, W. H. P. Woodroffe, J. Gough, J. Ingram, 0. E. Calcutt, O. T. Newton, A. W. Bennett, L. W. Tosswill, P. Way-’ mouth, W. Henderson-, P. A. Archer and Laurie Wilson; honorary secretary, Mr t). F. Oederwel’l; honorary treasurer, Mr W. W, Morton ; committee, Messrs D. Matson, J. Clarkson, S. Cadle, 0. Caygill, A. H. Noall, F. A, Polhill, H. Drinkman, W. Clarkson and A. Blnnden.
It was decided to leave to the president and honorary treasurer the duty of procuring a suitable present for Mr Oederwall, to mark the Association’s appreciation of that officer’s services. It was further decided that the committee arrange at an early date for a social gathering of a unique and interesting character, and for an early football match and an 'all-round sports gathering, to include bicycle, foot and horse racing during either September or October. Subscriptions for the current year being handed in by every member present, a'most hearty vote of thanks, accompanied by musical honours, was accorded to the president, and the proceedings closed.
