CANTERBURY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

A meeting of the committee of th© Camteteury Women’s Institute was held on Friday, in th© Metaphysical Club Room, Gloucester Street. Correspondence was received from th© City Council stating that the appointment of a woman sanitary inspector would receive consideration when the next appointment of an inspector was made. A short discussion on inebriate homes took place, and the following resolution waa unanimously passed That the Canterbury Women’s Institute views with great satisfaction the action of the Government in purchasing 800 acres of land with suitable buildings for the purpose of establishing an inebriate home in the south. The Institute also welcomes the Government's assurance that the matter has not been lost sight of, but that as opportunity offers, suit-able site®, for the establishment of similar institutions will be acquired. The Institute trusts that such opportunities will speedily occur, and that an inebriates’ home near each of th© four centres will shortly be an accomplished fact.” It was resolved—.“ Thao teds Institute endorses Mr Ell’s consistent advocacy of progressive legislation, and intends giving further consideration to the various points of his recent speech at tee next general meeting.” A discussion in which members expressed their strong advocacy of equal pay for equal work took place, and it waa unanimously resolved —“ That this Institute is glad to see the frequent references ‘to equal pay for equal work in articles in the ‘Lyttelton Times,’ and heartily thanks the Editor for his strong support of such an important reform.”
