The following new members have been returned to fill the vacancies created: by the Federal elections':—Gippsland North, Mr. Keogh; Avoca, Mr. Mitchell; .Gun-bower, Mr Cul-’ len; Benalla, Mr Hall; Footecray, Mr Fotheringham; and Fitzroy, Mr O’Connor. (Received June 19, 1.17 a-m.) MELBOURNE, June 18. Parliament has opened. Tire Speech indicated that steps would be taken to abolish the trade coupon system. Extreme caution also would be exercised over the State finances. A Bill would be introduced to make the Old Ago Pensions Act a permanent measure. It was also proposed to abolish the present educational system. Payment would be by results, instead of a fixed scheme of salaries for teachers. A WEALTHY ESTATE. The will" of Mr Edward Keep, an iron merchant, has been lodged for probate. The deceased’s colonial estate is valued at £245,000. SEVERE WEATHER. SYDNEY, June 18. There 'has been a heavy fall of snow in various inline! districts, and it is bitterly odd: on the coast.
