Walker, M.L.C., Messrs A. Boyle, P. Campbell, -H. A. Knight, G. F. Martin, F. H. Fync, J. B. Reid, R. Heaton Rhodes, D. Rutherford, J. Studholme, and T. Teschcmakor. Judge; Mr W. H. Hartgill. Honorary Treasurer: Mr G. G. Stead. Clerk of Course: Mr H. Thompson. Clerk of Scales; Mr Alfred Evans. Honorary Surgeon: Dr J. Palmer. Honorary Timekeeper: Mr HKohn. Starter: Mr 11. Piper. Handicapper:Mr J. E. Hcnrys. Secretary : Mr W. H. E. Wanklyn. Thera was only a. moderate attendance at the Summer Meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club yesterday, notwithstanding the 'fact that , the club attempted to -popularise it by announcing that free admission to the enclosures would he granted to ladies, and that gentlemen's tickets would be reduced to one-half tlje usual amount. The fixture is generally regarded as one winch caters almost exclusively to local owners and sportsmen, and the club's anticipations of experiencing a slight loss in connection with the gathering has always been fulfilled, and this year’s meeting, judging- by the limited number of visitors and the small amount of tota-lisator investments, will probably prove no exception to tho rule. The weather was uncomfortably warm, a strong nor'-wester, which blew -almost the whole of the afternoon, rendering -matters, somewhat unpleasant. ’ The- enclosures and course were m capital order, the lawn and flower beds looking their best. Mr P. Burke and the Misses Broadway catered for the club's visitors in their usual excellent'manner. The racing, on tho whole, was interesting, the day’s proceedings being noticeable for the excellent form exhibited by animals trained at Yaldhurst, Mr G. G. Stead securing no Jess than four out of the eight events on the card. The principal race of the meeting, tho MidSummer Handicap, provided a- capital contest, Skobeleff and Cameo being locked together for the last three , furlongs, victory resting with tho former by a' hare neck. Last season, in the same nice, fSkobeleff was defeated by a similar distance by Bon Farley. The winner nf yesterday’s contest was brought to the post in capital and making tho running from flag.fall, was great-, ly assisted in the last -few strides; by L. Hewitt, who is riding particularly well. Cameo has' made a. great improvement during tho last few months, and he was not by any means disgraced, whilst Scottish Minstrel, who occupied third position, ran surprisingly well. Paladin scarcely fulfilled expectations, and seeing that the first six furlongs of tho race were covered at a slow pace, he should have done better. He was very fractious -at tho post,- his repeated plunges ending in his becoming mixed up with the barrier tapes, which caused him to roll over. Huku ran disappointingly, and it is probable that had tho pace been made stronger during the earlier stages of the race, he would' have shown up much more prominently. Menschikoff simply ran away from his opponents in the hliddlepark Plate; covering the six furlongs in the fast time of Imin 14sec, which constitutes a record for the race, -and equals the New Zealand time registered by Loyalty and Barmby, and is only Isec slower than the Australasian record. Cruciform, the winner’s stable companion, finished second, well in front of Calibre,-and G'oldenmere, all of whom looked well, though the last-named ran- unkindly. The North Island mare, West Guard, secured the Hornby Welter Handicap, after an interesting race, the daughter of the defunct Vanguard 'defeating Female Franchise comfortably, whilst the favourite, Ismeue, who has never locked better, finished in- third position. Hawthorn was •bnught-in cheaply enough at, £25 after easily securing the Telegraph 'Stakes from tho favourite, Rougem'ont and Golden Rule, a filly by -the imported -horse Gold Reef. San Patricia had no trouble in defeating the moderate opposition in- the Lyttelton Plate. Probably Battler, who finished second, Battlecrv and Narcissus -are susceptible to improvement. Formosan ' appropriated the Graven Plate somewhat easily, the big son of.Hotchkiss coming through tho field at the distance, and winning from Terrapin by two lengths, with the useful Cora Linn third. The Trial Stakes, which brought the day's racing to a conclusion, was annexed by Cl.j-ndeboye, Bonaparte, who appeared to have the race at his mercy a hundred yards from home, being beaten by a length and' a half. The totalisator investments amounted to £3865, as against £4253 for the corresponding day Jast year. The following are details of the racing;

Half-way down the straight Female Franchise, Benzoin, .Cadet and West Guard drew near to Terrapin, who gave way to West Guard at tho distance, and the last-named maintaining her advantage ran homo a winner by three lengths from Female' Franchise, who was a similar distance in advance of Ismcne, with Terrapin a neck away fourth.
