The “ Times ” states that the Ophir will be commissioned during the present month, and that the Duke and Duchess of York will leave during March. Tho cruise will occupy six months. The Royal party will visit Gibraltar, Malta, Colombo, Singapore, all tbe Australian colonies, two ports in New Zealand (one in each island), Mauritius and Cape. Colony, and possibly one of the West Indian Islands and Canada. It is now reported that the programme of extensive naval demonstrations, published yesterday was unfounded. It is alleged that the squadrons would be unable to maintain a sufficient rate of speed. Nevertheless, sufficient war vc.wels will be assembled at each of the ports to give a suitable welcome. Two Channel cruisers will accompany the Ophir to Gibraltar, two ships of tho Mediterranean Squadron from Gibraltar to Suez, and H.M.S. St George and H.M.S. Juno will escort her the rest of the journey. A PROTEST FROM VICTORIA. MELBOURNE, Feb. 14. The cable message that the Duke and Duchess of York intend to go- direct to Sydney has caused much surprise and disappointment here. The Premier has instructed the Agent-General to see Mr Chamberlain, and strongly urge that, as the Duke of York is coming specially to Melbourne to -discharge an important commission, it is only right that he should come direct and make his official landing there. Otherwise plans will be upset and the people greatly disappointed. The Agent-General has cabled to the Premier that- Mr Chamberlain has authorised him to state that Melbourne will be the Duke and Duchess of York’s first port of call.

MELBOURNE HAPPY AGAIN. (Received Feb. 14, 11.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 14. Lord Hopetoun lias been informed that the Duke and Duchess of York will arrive at Melbourne on May 6, to open the Federal Parliament, and thence proceed to Brisbane, calling at Sydney on their return. They will afterwards proceed to New Zealand.
