THE WAVERLEY SENSATION.
BOURNS COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. [Per Press Association.] WANGANUI, Eeb. 13. At the Waverley Court yesterday James Bourns was committed for trial for the attempted murder of J. [R. Hickson, on Eeb. 5, at 'Waverley. Hickson is clerk of tbe Bank of New South Wales at Pa tea, about ten miles from Waverley. He was returning to Patea after closing the branch bank at Waverley with a bag containing £3lB in cash and £241 in cheques, when he heard someone following. Looking round, Bourns fired «, revolver point blank at him, only five or six yards away. He jumped to the side of the road when another shot was fired, one piercing his overcoat and the powdei going on his ear. A constable then luckily made his appearance, and Bourns decamped, hiding in the swamp, where he was eventually captured. A revolver with two chambers empty was found: near the scene of the occurrence. The accused worked at Waverley eighteen months ago as a rnuscabnut, at which time the bank was broken into and £56 stolen. On Dec. 6 last a futile attempt ‘was made to break into the bank at the same -place.
