Ths employees' of the Christ church establishments of the D.I. C. and the New Zealand Clothing Company recently made a presentation to'Mr D. Mahar, Avho in about to .pay a visit to England l . Mr Hendry, tht manager -of the Clothing Company in Christchurch, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Mahar with a handsome travelling rug and straps. The recipient fittingly acknowledg-ed'-the gift. A very enjoyable evening was spent in the Druid's' Hall on Saturday, when Trooper J. D. Hean, of the First Contingent, was entertained at a "social" by a number of Christchurch friends. . Several other -troopers lately returned from the front were also present. During the evening Trooper Hear-, was presented with a valuable -gold watch, bearing the following inscription:—"Presented to' No. 139, Trooper J- D. Hean, First iN.Z: Contingent, by Christchurch -admirers, in app'reciatimi' of the services rendered by -hint to his colony and to the Empire during' the South 'African war. Period of active service extending from 7th October, 1899, to 25th January, 1901.". . On the outside of the case was inscribed "Remember," " With' French to Kimberley," ' and " New Zealand Hill." Trouper Hean was also the recipient of a, handsome writing case, inscribed—"To Trooper J. D. Hean, from Christchurch admirers, on his return 'from South Africa, Jan. 25, 1901."_ The guest appropriately and feelingly replied. A pleasant gathering came to a close with the singing of " Aulrl 'Lang Syne," and cheers for the various troopers.
