A MELBOURNE VISITOR.
THE REV S. CAKEIV ~A'distinguished, cleric is always made welcome in Chr.istchurch, and this fact was made manifest yesterday to the Rev S. Carry, - of. the' celebrated Collins StreetTabernacle, Melbourne', who conducted' services in theCnristchurch BapH's:■ Tabernacle. The Collins Street Tabernacle is the", chief Baptist Church in Australasia, and it. * can be readily understood that the pastor in charge of it is likely to be somebody of note among the Baptist people. The Rev S. Carey is a brother of Mr Carey, of the firm of Toneycliffe -and Carey, drapers, Colombo and Gloucester Streets, and is here on a visit to his brother, as well as with the object of making a tour of-the colony. His tour will cover three weeks, and Mr and Mrs Carey will accompany him. He will go to the North Island, and spend a few days amongst the beauties of nature as shown at the hot lakes, but he will also see all that is to be teen -otf colonial liie in New Zealand during his s'tay. Mr Carey has been eight months pastor of Collins Street, and ■during that time, as Baptists-know, "the work of the Lord hath prospered in his hands," and he has preached to large congregations at every-service. lie was chosen for, the position'by the B?v Dr Clifford; who only recently, made a tour,of this colony, and is one.of the'best pulpit orators .the. Church 'possesses; and by the Rev Dr M'Laren, who. is also in the front- rank as a. preacher! .'"■ The rev gentleman had lar<;c congregations at both services yesterday, and nn the evemnc' he "preached "from Acts viii.. 35. In-ig.raph.ic language the preacher told the story of Philip's interview with the Chancellor of Oandao'e, the Queen of Ethiopia, pointing out that the country ever which she re'ig.ned was the same Soudan which had so .recently been a 'theatre, of war, .with the British troops in.the ascendant, and Ivhartnm wto her capital city. The story w;vs to'ld in 'deta'fl, and every in'adsnt and' feature of it was made the .subject of Gospel lesson or exhortation. In the course of the service, Mr Carey made . reference to the evangelistic services w'hich Mr and Mrs Oatts are no>w conducting in Christchurch, and spoke in glowing terenis of the work done by these evangelists recently in .Melbourne.
