THE NEW CENTURY.
TO THE EDITOH. Sir,— Ai! the idea is gaining ground that the new century began on Jan. 1, 1901, I’ vould by your kind permission state as. bnefly as possible that the century whichbegan on Jan. 1, 1800, chronologically following all the previous centuries, ended 1 on Dec. ol 1899 with a complete 100 years, ihe birth of the new century, took place' the next moment, viz., oh, Jan. 1, 1900 (not 1901), and' 100 years will carry it to Dec. 31, 1999. There will be. no need to take a year from the year 2000 to.make up the century. It is easy for any one. to put down all the years from 1800 to 1899 to And they count up to 100 years, -which, make the century. I hope the newspapers will crush this new-fangled idea that the, present century began on Jan. 1, 1901. I am, etc., WH. PARKER.
