THE VOLUNTEERS.

A dismounted parade of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles was -held in the orderlyroom on Thursday night. Twenty men under Captain Snow and Lieutenant Peacock-were present, and were exercised in guard mounting and picket post in two squads, under Sergeants Bradley and Wright. Twenty men tinder Sergeant-Major M’Cartney at Tai Tapu, and ten men under Sergeant Gilniour at Halswell, also paraded. The second public meeting in connection with the formation of a mounted infantry corps wais held at West Melton on Thursday evening. There was again a good attendance, and much enthusiasm was shown. Mr Graham, the secretary, reported that a partial canvass of West Melton and Halkett had been encouraging, and that over sixty men had announced their intention to become members. A sub-ccmmittee, consisting of Messrs Walker, W. Legg, Graham, Bailey, Roberts, Nelson, and J. Legg, was appointed to convene a meeting at Weedons on Tuesday to enrol members. It was decided to hold a general meeting of members on March 29 to elect officers and prepare an application for presentation to. the Defence authorities. At the annual muster pai’ade of the Timaru volunteers, for-inspection of arms, on Thursday night, 148 men were present.
