VICTORIA COLLEGE.

[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 21. The committee of the Victoria College Council set up to consider the scholarship regulations, • finds that the Council has no power to prevent holders of Education Board scholarships from also holding Queen’s scholarships, neither has the Education Board power to do the like. It is estimated that in the year 1903 and thereafter, Queen’s scholarships will cost the Council not less than £IOOO. The Council also sooner or later will have to pay rental for the accommodation of city classes "of not less than £250 a year. In view of such heavy charges against the annual grant, the committee does not see how the Council can carry on the legitimate work of a University College. The committee, therefore, ■is of opinion that the Council should make every effort to get relief from this heavy expenditure in scholarships. If this relief is given, the committee has under consideration a scheme of scholarships by which all the advantages of the present scheme to the various parts of the district will be secured. This was adopted, and the committee’s time appointment- extended for a month to enable it to formulate a. scheme of scholarships.
