As she left Liverpool on Feb. her passage occupied 403 days, 197 of which are recorded as days of detention, during which she was in one port or another undergoing repairs. She appears in good order, on the whole. A considerable number of persons went to the wharf during the morning to inspect her. The passage from Wellington occupied twenty-six hour?, and on it the Manchester, as, indeed, during the whole of her long voyage, showed ’•!hers»lf an exceedingly good sea boat. She is, lip. technical language, a double .twin-screw hop--1 par dredger, 175 ft long and 40ft in beam, aijd with engines of the triple expansion typo, of about. 1600 horse-power indicated. She is fitted with compound engines for hoisting, and with ! another .similar set for traversing the! Sadder. ‘She can dredge with cither set of her joain .to a depth of 33ft, at the rate

of about 400. tons per hour. The is an after dredge, fitted witheight hoppers amidships, which hold altogether about 800 tons. She can also discharge ovexsides mm hoppers lying alongside. She is electric light throughout ,and her installation includes three deck lights of 500 candle power each, intended specially for working by night. The dredger is a perfect mass of machinery, as may he judged from the fact that when »ne i« in full operation she has no fewer than twenty-six steam cylinders working. The quarters for her company are aft, those of the officers and engineers being onr the starboard, and those of the crew on the p.ort side. The company which brought her out to the colony consists of twenty-seven, all told, her officers being Captain J. Morris; Mr T. Galgey, chief officer; Mr T. Pttrvis, second officer; Mr T. Napier, chief engineer; Mr H. Raymond, ‘Second engineer; and Mr D. Kelleher. Mr Raymond: has been in the Manchester as chief and ‘Second engineer for five years, having joined her when she was at woiii :a the Manchester Ship Canal in 1893. He was out of her for two years, during which she was laid up. He is to take charge of the dredge, as chief engineer, under the Lyttelton Harixmr Board. It is estimated' that it will tako about a month to rsfit her in. order to make her ready for work.
