THE PLAGUE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Over and over again it has been stated in your paper that brewers’ veastwould cure typhoid fever. The “ Otago Witness ” some years ago had the following paragraph in its columns “Yeast has been successfully tried as a remedy for typhoid fever by Drs Enabling, Lempriere, and Thomson, of the Alfred- Hospital, Melbourne. Thirty-seven cases were treatedl. In every case the recovery took place without a relapse. Dr O’Hara, of Melbourne, states that the yeast will destroy the typhoid bacilli. Now, as far as I can read, the jdague is a very bad form of typhoid fever, and is unquestionably a blood poison. Now, if yeast will kill the bacilli and purify the blood in case of typhoid fever, might it not do the same in plague-stricken people? I have seen the yeast tried on quite a- number of people suffering from typhoid, and in every case a speedy cure has been the result, and I have never known it to fail in a single instance where tried. Seeing the beautiful clear water we have in Christchurch, I do not think we need fear the plague getting any stronghold here; but if there should be a case, or two, those who are looking after the patients would act wisely in taking a teaspoonful of charcoal in a tumblerful of water two or three times a day, which it is stated its a' grand preventive.—l am, etc., PREVENTION. P.S. —In case of typhoid, the dose for an adult is two tab’cispoonfuls of new yeast mixed in warm water, four or five times a dav. Of course, much less would be required for a child.—P.
