THE JUBILEE SINGERS.
That the M’Adoo Jubilee Singers Had left a very favourable impression behind them on their last visit to Christchurch was amply demonstrated by the , reception. accorded to them at the Choral Hall last evening by a very large audience, and the manner in which they carried out the. programme dully justified, the enthusiastic applause with which each item was.greeted, scarcely a number escaping an encore. The company has been strengthened by the .addition of two lady vocalists, and with, their aid the concerted music was rendered in a manner even more satisfactory than bn previous occasions, the voices being better. balanced. The first part of the programme consisted for the most part of jubilee choruses, many of them being old favourites, and every one was redemanded. The best item- in this portion was -undoubtedly Sullivan’s “ Lost Chord,” which, was sung as a quartette by Madame M’Adoo, and Misses Anderson, Gibbons and Geag, and was vociferously; encored. Mr M’Adoo sang “Hard Times Come Again no More,” and-in response to an encore, “Dixie.” Madame M’Adoo’s unique tenor voice was eminently suited to Bartlett’s pretty song “ Because,” and in response t 6 an encore she gave “ The Cuckoo,” with very good l effect, and being called on again sang the - simple “ Playmates. ” Miss f Susie. Anderson, sang with due 1 effect “ Queen of the Night,” and for an encore “Maggie.” Mr R. H. Collins sang the coon.' song “ Two Little Pkcaninis,” and for an encore gave theiever-wel-come “ Suzi-ue.” Madame M’Adoo and Mi Collins’s voices blended nicely in the duet “I Heard a Voice.” Messrs Nott, Collins, White and M’Adoo Sang the humorous quartette “ The Three Crows,” without accompaniment, and earned ; a hearty encore. The concerted numbers were a pretty setting of Strauss’s “ Blue, Danube Waltz,” into which some unique effects were introduced, and for an encore a very pretty medley was given, and as a finale the company gave a very good imitation of a brass band, in which the tones of the various instruments were exceedingly well reproduced. All the choruses and jubilee songs were rendered with a robustness ’ and precision which won hearty applause from the audience. Mr Jerry Mills gave a very amusing eihiMtibii of acrobaticfiWbifc';. The same programme will, ,be repeated this evening, and on Friday there will be a change of programme. ■ ■
