FOOTBALL.

o [From Our Correspondent.] L DUNEDIN, July 19.

Kaikorai not being able to get their full strength away this week, have wired to the Linwood Club that they will definitely play them on the following Saturday, July 29. With the Wellington-Otago match on August 2, and the Alhambra-Kaikorai match on August 6, several of the players have a big week’s work before them. It will not come as a surprise if one or two of the club’s backs do not take part in the contest against Wellington. CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION. A special meeting of the delegates to the Canterbury Rugby Union was held last evening, at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr G. IT. Mason presided, and there were sixteen delegates present. The Chairman said the meeting had been called, at very short notice, to elect a member of the Selection Committee in place of Mr H. Frost, who had resigned. Messrs G. H. Mason and A. J. Lawrence were nominated, and. on a ballot being taken, Mr Mason was elected. On the motion of Mr F. T. Evans, seconded by Mr W. Walton, the delegates placed on record their appreciation of Mr Frost’s services as a selector, and their regret at his resignation. The meeting then closed. A meeting of the committee was held subsequently ; present—Messrs G. H. Mason (chairman), J. R. Evans, F. E. Asquith, F. T. Evans, J. C. Adams, H. Frost, G. Scott, W. Waito’n and W. G. Garrard (honorary secretary.) The Secretary of the Merivale Club wrote explaining that the "paragraph complained of in his letter had not been intended to he impertinent. It was merely the expression of a hope that more competent referees might be appointed, and had not been written by direction of the committee of his. club. The explanation was accepted. The New Zealand Rugby Union wrote stating that the Otago and Wellington Unions had asked that the names of referees might be submitted 'to them in view of their match on August 2, and asking if Mr F. T. Evans or some other competent referees would agree to their names being forwarded. The matter was left in the hands of Mr Evans and the Secretary. Mr Garrard said that he had been informed by Mr Carr that the Kaikorai Club would certainly come to Christchurch to play Linwood on July 29. The members of the committee questioned the advisableness of granting permission for the match on the Saturday before terbury match. July 29 was the date fixed for the match against Ellesmere, and if South Canterbury were unable to play on July 27, the ■ Canterbury representatives would not have a game together. The matter was left to Messrs Mason and F. T. Evans and the Secretary to arrange. The motion which had been passed tlie previous evening with regard to teams playing short-handed, was rescinded, and on the motion of Mr Walton, seconded by Mr Asquith, the committee agreed to recommend in its place the following new rule:—“Except under special circumstances it shall be considered no match unless two spells of not less than forty minutes each be played, and the side unwilling to proceed shall be held to have defaulted.” The meeting then closed. The following are the grounds and referees for Saturday’s matches Junior Flag —Christchurch v. Albion, Lancaster Park, Mr A. J. Lawrence; Lyttelton v. Linwood, Linwood ground, Mr J.
