A curious case, occurred at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Jane . Denise and Anthony aDeruse appeared on an application by the former for’-a separation order and maintenance. -It'transpired that the parties were" stepfather v 'and stepdaughter. The Magistrate said that as the parties were not husband and wife lie declined to make an order. Ultimately the Magistrate allowed the ease to stand over till tine next day.
At a meeting of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children a resolution was carried asking the Auckland members of the Legislature to support the Society’s application for a Government grant. The new by-law to prevent street betting is being vigorously enforced by the police. In connection with the race meeting at Wellington to-day a crowd collected at their usual comer, at Vulcan Lane, but the police quickly made the betting fraternity disperse, and the corner was, quite clear for the rest of the day .
