CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

An ordinary .meeting of the Charitable Aid Board) was held at the Armagh Street Depot yesterday; present—Messrs F. J. Board (chairman),; J. T. Smith, R. Westerns, W. Prudhoe, H. .White, H. Feldwick, J. Wallace, B. P. Manhire, R. FriedLander, J. Dobson, C. J. Harper, and Mrs Black.i An apology for absence was received from Mr J, G. Murray. ,

The report of the Chairman statedthat the lowest tenderer for- the supply of bread ;tb, the Memorial Home had, declined to sign tho contract, because he was under the belief that tenders for both store and Home would be considered jointly. A tenderer for gro-r ceries for the Ashburton Horns had acted in a similar manner, and, the conditions, of these contracts required amending,/so as to provide for the forfeiture of the .deposits in such cases.' In the matter of MrjTibbles's bequest, expenses had to be provided out of the estate, which would reduce the Board's share of the bequest to £BS. A deed of transfer had been prepared, and awaited the seal of the Board. No decision, as to the proposed purchase in connection with, the Twigger Estate had been arrived at, owing to' the absence-, of the Judge. The Amuri County. .Council had paid one-half of the amount for which the Wairau Board had claimed in respect of ratable property comprised within the county territory, but alleged at the same time to be within the Wairau Charitable Aid district. The report was approved.;, The Chairman asked for the direction of the B ! nard withi regard to the retention or otherwise by the Board of the deposit lodged by the lowest tenderer who had refused to take up the contract. It was resolved to alter the conditions, so that future deposits should, be forfeited under similar circumstances, but to return the deposit under notice tp the tenderer. was resolved that the seal of tho Boa.rd should be affixed to the Tibbies- deed of transfer, and that the Amuri County Council should be informed that it must pay the money due to the Board within one month from date. A letter was read from the Canterbury Women*s Institute asking the Board to appoint two delegates, to a meeting to discuss an amended scheme for Industrial and Reformatory Schools. The letter was received. " The Board then went into committee to consider the report of the subcommittee appointed to report upon the proposed letting of part of , the Twigger estate. ■ On resuming, the Chairman reported that the.committee had decided that the thirty-five-acre block should be offered by public auction for lease for seven, fourteen, or twenty-one years. The committee was empowered to take steps' to put the remaining sections up for auction on the Glasgow lease tenure. The following instalments on account of the new year's rates .were to hand:—Kaiapoi Borough Council, £lO 15s 6d; Akaroa County 4 d; Eyreton R6ad Board, £2B 19s 3d; Linwood- Borough Council, £9 15s- 2d; Ashburton County Council, £175 ;lss Id; Amuri' County Council, £l4 4s 6d. The recerots from other sources since the last meeting of the Board amounted to £2B 0s 6d, besides £93 3s 4d old age pensions surrendered 1 b~ inmates of the Homes, and income from the ■Twigger estate, amounting-to £lll 8s Bd. The allocation list and.treasurer's report were adopted, and the Board rose.
