THE WEATHER.
Very heavy south-west rain set in, with cold . weather, on Monday night, and showers fell at frequent intervals throughout yesterday. Last evening it was again raining heavily. ...Ihe ..weather-at Lyttelton yesterday was wintry, frequent showers of rain falling, work on the wharves being considerably retarded in consequence. On Monday evening a very heavy downpour of rain fell all over the Ellesmere dis- ,■; ‘ trict, and continued throughout Tuesday. All the creeks and ditches in the'district are bank to bank, and.it is feared that a lot of damage may be done to the .potato crop. ■ The ground it how softer than it has been formany years past, and those farmers round the Lakeside district who have not yet got their grain threshed will find great difficulty in inducing threshing machine ■ i owners to run the risk of getting their mills bogged. The threshing, however, is .practically- over, and the yields all round •have been enormous, considerably more than the Government estimates. A sharp southery squall, with heavy ; showers, blew over South Canterbury on i„: Monday night. The ranges were well whitened in the morning. ..
