THE MISSING STEAMER.

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, May 9. Departing steamers are being instructed to keep a look-out for the Perthshire, and if there is no news in a day or two-a search steamer will be sent out.

[From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, May 9.

The theory amongst marine experts here is that some portion of the Perthshire’s machinery has broken down, and that-she has been driven outy>f her course. [Pee Pkess Association.] INVERCARGILL, May 9. A noon to-day a pigeon arrived from-Puy-segur Lighthouse with a despatch for Lloyd’s agent here, to the effect that there was no sign of the S.S. Perthshire. The bird had probably been-xeleased about-eight a.m.

Messrs Turnbull, Martin and Co., the Dunedin agents for the -Shire line, have, says yth© “ Otago Daily Times,” cabled Home for instructions regarding the overdue steamer, Perthshire. Until they receive instructions nothing further -will be done in the -way of instituting-a search for her. They, however, do not anticipate any danger of the steamer’s safety, the probability being that she has broken her shaft, in winch case she would bo utterly helpless until another steamer picks her up and takes her in tow. Tim chances against picking her up by a-search steamer are accentuated by the fact that an open stretch of ocean' of over one thousand one hundred miles lies between Australia and New Zealand, and another vessel might easilypassber too Jar off to-see-her,.
