COUNTY COUNCILS.

GERALDINE. The monthly meeting of the Geraldine County Council was held bn Thursday; pre-sent—-Messrs J. Talbot (chairman), A. Kelman, W. Shiers, G. J. Dennistoun, R. Mackay, and Richardson. The League of New Zealand Wheelmen requested the Council to erect finger-posts at crossings in the county, to prevent tourist cyclists 'going astray} The request was not entertained. The Engineers submitted a (detailed contract plan for the re-construction of the Upper Orari Bridge with a. 12ft deck. It was (decided that the work should be proceeded with, and that the' South Upper Orari Bridge should be taken down and a road and ford substituted. The Engineers also reported on the proposal to build a light traffic bridge 600 ft long over the south branch of Opuha River, .on the Clayton Road, and a letter was received from Mr G. S. Hamilton stating that he had assurance of support from Mount Peel Road Board, Mackenzie County Council, and the landowners in the neighbourhood, the latter promising about £l4O. CojJies of the cor- ’ respondence and. of the Engineers’ reports were ordered to be sent to Mount Peel Road Board ,and Mackenzie County Council, asking them ■ to contribute £3OO and £2OO respectively, and the Geraldine Council would contribute £2OO. The reports from Waterrace Committees were satisfactory. Mr J. Hay paid under protest the amount owing for water rates in the case of Council v. Gregan. It was decided that Mr Hay should be informed that Mr Gregan, in his application for water, agreed to pay the rate. A resolution was passed , confirming the special order constituting the Arundel Water Supply district.- Mr E. Evans wrote objecting-to have his property included in the proposed .Arundel Water district. Messrs J. Ellis, D. M’Leod, A. Bates, and W. K. Macdonald waited on the Council with a petition signed by forty settlers in the vicinity of Orari objecting to water being taken from the Orari to supply the new water district at Arundel, as the taking of water for this purpose in the past had dried up creeks on the south side of the river. Mr Marohant was asked to report on the" matter. It was resolved . to strike a rate of one farthing in the £. The annual water race interest and maintenance rates were fixed for the various districts. It was agreed to remit the interest rates in Rangitata, Woodbury, and Geraldine Plat .districts, and td remit the maintenance rate in Orari-Waihi district. Accounts amounting to £39517s 9d were passed "for payment, and the Council then rose.
