REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Canterbury Referees’ 1 : ' Association was held last evening at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr H. E. Hiadiestone was in the chair, and there were ten mem-: , bers present.' The Secretary reported that he had ■ written to the New Zealand Rugby Union with' regard to the interpretation of Rule 16. This nil© States that. ‘‘ in case a throw-forward or knock-on, the ball shall'; bo at once brought back to where such infringement took place, and there put down.-” , In the past a scrummage has been ordered in such eases, but when considering the rules at the annual meeting, the members of the 1 Association came to the conclusion that that j ruling hdd been wrong, and that it was j simply necessary for the hall to be taken j back, put down, and immediately played, i The Appeal Committee lagreed, with the 1 opinion of the. Association. Mr Garrard i said he had written privately to the New South Wales Referees’ Association, and had learned, that that body ruled according to the written law, and . did not order a scram, r r ; The members agreed to rule in future in ac- i cordance with .the Appeal Committee's de-' cision. Several other .points in regard to the rules were 'discussed,, and rulings agreed upon. The appointment of timekeepers , was discussed, and it was decided to adhere' to the rule on the subject. The opinion k was, however, expressed that a referee might, if he chose, appoint timekeepers. | A match .between Pioneer of Lyttelton and Melrose of Christchurch was played on Thursday afternoon at the Nona Park, when Pioneer easily defeated Melrose by ; thirteen to three points.
