CHEVIOT SETTLERS ' ASSOCIATION.

The monthly meeting of the Cheviot Settlers’ Association was held on Saturday evening. The President (Mr G. W. Forbes) occupied the-chair. The sub-committee reported having" waited on the agent of the Wakatu with the object of.securing a reduction in the freight on grain. The owners of the steamer had offered to reduce the freight by 10 percent, on condition that a guarantee was given to ship 80,000 bushels during the season. The Chairman stated that he had replied that tho Association was not in a position to. give a guarantee, but that it was hoped that the reduction would be given to all shippers, if at the end of the season it was found that that quantity had been sent away. Mr Briggs asked to be allowed to postpone the reading of his paper on “Smut in Grain until next meeting. Various amounts were reported to have been promised towards the prize fund of the produce show. A motion brought forward to introduce the exhibition of implements at the show was negatived, as it was too near the time of the show to change the original intention of restricting the exhibits to an inside show. It was resolved to hold a monster meeting on May 23, to agitate on the railway and Waiau bridge questions. The Secretary was instructed to communicate with the Waipara Road Board and the Minister of Public Works, pointing out the urgent need of opening up the stock road through,Mr Maunering’s property.
