CITY VALUING.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir. —-Following up_ the latter in your issue, of to-day signed “ Citizen,” suggesting that the Town Clerk should do Mho valuing, I think it, very probable that he will have to. as no ens who bad not valued the city before, colild do it for the price offered. There are between 4500 and 5000 serara-te. interests to value, and Ike Council 'have left the matter sc- ia.to that these must La visited'.'in sonic cldvs, as Ihe valuation must be .com-' nlatod bv, F-sb. 15.’ ~’Tke remuneration is‘ab-’ . MOO a year. ,p.rd monthly. ‘ The. vainer has to ri:-h the properties, make bis valuations', and then enter them up in the valuation list. As he cannot 'possibly So this himself in the time, lie must employ clerical assistance, probably at a cask of £2O or £3O. Further, bs has to prepare and deliver the notices required to each owner and occupier: worth, at least. £lO mors. Ho can estimate., his outgoings for the ,five mrirths (say up to the sitting of the Assessment Cmirf! at £4O to £SO. His salary will be- £4l 13s 4d. I fancy the Council must intend the Town Clerk to do Hie valuin'-, or thev would firefly have put- the matter in hand earlier, and secondly, they would have offered a price for the work that would have some proportion to the labour entailed. T am assuming that a new valuer is to be appointed. I doubt if cither of the. old ones, though they have all the particulars to hand, will‘offer their services for such a paltrv sum. lam, etc,, FAIR PAY.
