PUBLIC MORGUE.

- TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —On reading the report of Monday night’s meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council,l,was greatly surprised to find a proposal put forward by tho deputation from the Christchurch City Council in favour of utilising the old Sydenham sewage shed for such a purpose as a morgue. ■Our city lathers are treading on very dangerous ground, and as a ratepayer I should certainly advise , them to go slow, and keep clear of that locality, which is most valuable for rating purposes on account of. its close proximity to the railway and the centre of a vast and growing population. We have not forgotten tho Syd-nnam sewage scheme, wliieh cost the Christchurch ratepayers about £SOO in law costs, and tho Sydenham ■, ratepayers a, similar amount.-, before-- it was e(TactualJy stopped. . Now .it r seems incredible that the City Councillors, after fighting ?o hard and spending so much money-against that scheme■ in order - to- save the value of property and the health of the residents, should be the actual proposers of another ghastly scheme on exactly tho same spot. It tho previous proposed site-; at the ChesterScreeft Fire Brigade S Miouand the hospital were ■ considered «etniuental to health, then the site on tho South Town Belt must be even more dangerous to health, on Recount of tho thicker population. If tire City Council must lave a morgue in a central position why not use the one at the pohco station, which I believe is an excellent one, and if ib is not available I think tho public should know the reason why.—l am, etc , WATCHFUL.
