CURRENT NOTICES.
The following meetings will be held today .—Charitable Aid Board, special meeting, 10.30 a.m. ; Board of Education, 11 a.m.; South Island Trotting Association, Morten’s Buildings,' 7.30 p.m,; Philosophical Institute,, Biological School, 8 p.m.; Garrison Library, 8 pan. There will--be a combined practice of the chorus and orchestra of the Motett Society at the rooms, Cambridge Terrace, on Thursday. ■ . ' A conversazione and concert will be held at the Boys’ High School at 7.30 on Saturday evening, when the honours board, the gilt of Mr J. H. Menzies, will he unveiled. The entertainment is in aid of the cricket pavilion and magazine funds. The annual meeting of the Christ’s College Old Boys’ Association will be held in the College schoolroom ■at 8 pm. on Thursday, Oct- 13, (the sports day), and will be followed by a smoke concert. Luncheon will be provided for Old Boys in the schoolroom, between noon and 2 pan . on the sports day. The bachelors’ annual ball will bo held in the Burwood Hall this evening.
Mr E, W. Seager will give a limelight exhibition at the Salvation Army Barracks, Victoria Street, this evening. The Christchurch corps of the Salvation Army is doing all in its power to make the coming . self-denial effort a success, and, in order to assist the fund, has arranged to hold an exhibition and sale on Oct, 12,13, 14 and 15. The Lyttelton Borough Council has decided that 10 per cent will be added to all unpaid rates after Nov. 24. The Council also intends, taking steps to collect all outstanding amounts, the civic representatives objecting to pay interest on overdraft when they have so much money outstanding on their books. The Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show will be held at Leeston, on Thursday, Oct. 20, entries closing a week previously. An excursion train will leave Christchurch for Leeston, on the show day, at 8.15 a.ra. At the Theatre Royal this evening, Mr Rossiter’s Amateur Operatic Society will make its first appearance in Gilbert and Sullivan’s nautical opera “ H.M.S. Pinafore. Last evening a full dress rehearsal took place,, at the Theatre, and judging from the' manner in which the opera was put on, those _ who visit the Theatre tbit evening will’ have no cause to regre doing so. The’ scenery, which has been painted by, Mr C. Whaite, is extremely good, and the set is entirely new, The orchestra is a strong one, and the principal parts are all in capable hands. ' Owing to the opening night of the St Mary’s Home bazaar being fixed for Thursday, Nov. .3, the date for the orchestral concert of the Musical Union originally arranged for that evening has been altered to Tuesday, Nov. 1, as many subscribers to the Union are interested in the bazaar.
