MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES
The weekly, korero of the Christchurch Savage Club was held last night. Savage Sir George Clifford presided, and a full programme of song and story was carried out. In celebration of the “Fourth of July,” the western wall was draped with the Stars and Stripes and Union Jack combined, while the New Zealand flag was hung over the two. In the course of the evening Mr Skelton played “The Star Spangled Banner” as a violin solo, and the compliment was acknowledged by Mr R. Pitcaithly, the local Consul for' the United States. Mr G. P. Williams will take the chair next Monday evening. The monthly meeting of the Sydenham Baptist Band of Hope was held on Friday evening. There was a good attendance, and Mr Millar occupied the cliair. An excellent programme was contributed by members of the Primitivei Methodist Band of Hope, Linwood. Recitations were given by Misses Hampton, Struthers, Grouse, Stokes, Smith and Mr Bradley; songs by Miss Mabel Napier and Mr J. Grouse; duets by Messrs Snell and Grouse; auto-harp solos by Mr Nixon, and selections by the choir. The Methven Literary Society held a meeting on Thursday evening, Mr W. Morgan, vice-president, being in the chair. The evening was taken up in interesting and The-'Methvhn. Band of Hope held a,successful meeting on Friday, when Mr Hunter presided. The ■Wdien’ce'-was entertained with readings and musical selections, which were much appreciated. At the weekly meeting of the Springfield Mutual Improvement Society, the business consisted ol ... debate on the subject, “Has the Granting of Female Franchise. Raised the Standard of our MH.R.’s?” Mrs Atkinson appeared for the affirmative and Mr E. Gillanders in the negative. After an animated discussion, in which several members joined, a vote of members decided in the negative. At the meeting of St Paul’s Guild, Papanui, held on Thursday evening, the President (Rev H. T.' Purchas) was in , the chair. There was a .large attendance- of members. The proceedings for the evening took the form of a mock'election, .Mr T; Morton standing in the Conservative, interest, and Mr W. Matson in '’ the ‘ Liberal; After both candidates had given their views on the political questions of the day, a vote was’ taken, which resulted in. the, election of the Liberal candidate by .fourteen votes to thirteen. ’ :
