HUNTING.
Owing to the hard state of the ground, the Christchurch Hunt Club has been obliged to postpone the commencement of active operations until nest Saturday, when . the season will be formally opened. A . few members met on Saturday last at Prebbieton, and, although the weather was opposed to good sport, spent an enjoyable hour with the hounds. The Brackenficld hounds were hunted on Saturday in the Woodend district, the meet being at Mr C. Dampier-Crossley’s Brockenhurst Estate. Over forty joined in the hunt, several ladies being of the party. _ In the morning a strong hare led the field from Brockenhurst nearly into Kaiapoi, and eventually left the hounds at fault. After this run, a return was made to the starting place, where lunch was provided, Mr J. Crossley entertaining the party in the absence of his father in Sydney. In the afternoon the Maori Reserve was tried, but only one or two short runs were obtained, and no kills resulted. During the ensuing three weeks the hounds will be hunted in the Amur! district, Balmoral being the first meeting place.
