CHEVIOT.

Mr George Forbes, the nonorary secretary of the Cheviot County Settlers' iissociation, has received the following telegram from the Premier with reference to his visiting Cheviot during the May show: —“Thanks for invitation for May 24. Eegret unable to give definite reply at present, but will do so later on. E„ J. Seddon, Balclutha.” A cricket match, Parnassus v. Cheviot, was played at Parnassus on Saturday, and resulted in a decisive victory for Parnassus. The scores were:—Parnassus 125, Cheviot 19 and 51. Owing to a heavy rain the Cheviot team were simply at sea in the field, and the team had lost four of its best men through their inability to obtain leave of absence. Considering the bad weather the game was a most enjoyable one. Cox, for Parnassus, played excellently for 36, Toose and Turner bowled well for the winners. Balch, for Cheviot, made 27. Amuri Eobinson bowled well for the losers. A first-rate luncheon was provided by Mr and Mrs Giles of Parnassus. A cricket match was played at Mendip Hills on Sunday between a combined team from Parnassus and Mendip and a Cheviot team. Mr A. W. Eutherford, jun, captained the combined ,team, and Mr Clem Eobinson the Cheviot. Mendip won the toss, and playing excellently, ran up a score of 75. A. Eutherford 20, Buchanan. ] 7, and Forbes 12, were the highest scorers for the combined team. Luncheon was provided on a liberal scale by Mr and Mrs A. W. Eutherford for the teams and visitors, numbering nearly 150 people. Mr Clem Eobinson proposed a hearty vote of' thanks to the best and hostess for the excellent entertainment provided. Mr A. W. Eutherford responded, and 'trusted that the present match would be the forerunner of more for years to come. After luncheon the Cheviot team took the wickets at 2.30 p.m., and were all disposed of for the small total of 28, Amuri Eobinson being. top scorer with 14.
