On the motion of Councillor Tanner, the Clerkwas instructed to communicate with the Heathcote Road Board on the matter, with a view to the appointment of a committee of that Board to meet a committee of the Council for the purpose' of drawing up, specifications for the ’ work. On the motion of Councillors Tanner and Hawkins, it was decided that Mr Connal’s cheque should be paid into the Bank of New Zealand to a separate account, to be called the " Canal Reserve Works Account,” the account to be acted upon only by the Mayor and’ the Chairman of the Finance . Committee. The Clerk reported that three new lanterns were required for the street lamps, and he was instructed to procure them. Councillor Tanner moved,: as per notice, and Councillor Milne seconded —“ That this Council deems it expedient that the provisions of the Ratingon Unimproved Values Act, 1896, should he adopted in the borough.” After considerable discussion the motion was car-; ried by six do three. As to draining Earkes Street, Roimata, it was decided that as many of the councillors as could should meet on the ground on Saturday, at spjn.. to make themselves personally acquainted with the nature of what was asked for by; the settlers. The Mayor moved, and Councillor Milne seconded—“ That the Council tender for the lease of Lucas’s land, with the view of converting the said site into a recreation ground for the borough.” The Mayor, in moving his resolution, explained that it was- a well-known fact that the residents of the borough had long felt the want of and were anxious to have a ground in' their midst for recreation purposes; and he thought that the present opportunity of securing the site, which was; suitable in every way, should not be allowed to pass by them, the tenure,; although at present a leasehold, could eventually be converted into a freehold. The Councillors all agreed as to the advisableness of having a recreation ground, but thought it unsatisfactory to lease a site for such a purpose, and upon' the motion being put it was lost by 8" votes to 2, the mover and seconder only voting for it. The Clerk was instructed to press for the payment of all outstanding rates. The report of the Finance Committee was received, and the accounts presented were ordered to be paid. The meeting-then terminated.
