THE HOLIDAY.
Yesterday, being St Patrick’s Day, was, observed as a partial holiday. At 9.30 a.m. the children attending the Catholic Schools mustered on the South Belt to the number of over 1000, and, under the Marist Brothers, were marched to the railway station, and at 10.30 a special train of eighteen carriages, all filled, left for the Eiccarton racecourse, where the Catholic demonstration was held. Another train left later in the day. About 3000 persons went by tram to Sumner, where the annual gala was held, and the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting was very largely patronised. In the evening there was a crowded house at the Theatre Eoyal. [Per Press Association,! WELLINGTON, March 17. A heavy gale blew in the night, and was followed by rain; but the morning was bright, and there is a perfect day for theholiday. It is slightly windy. The principal celebrations are the Hibernian Sports at the Basin Deserve, and picnics.
