AMATEUR ATHLETICASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held last night in the City Hotel; present —Messrs J. F. Grierson, South Canterbury (chairman); J. C. Cusaclc and P. W. Johnston, Canterbury; J. H. Hempton and L. W. Harley, Wellington; J. S. Hawkes and T. M. Bun tin, Wanganui; J. Moir, Waitaki ; C. F. Smith, Taranaki; Dr Jennings, North Shore; Dr Thomas, Thames; and Messrs B. P. Gully and C. A. Treweek, Nelson. Apologies were received from Messrs P. Solig, C. Hood Williams, H. S. Batchelor and IC. Bassett. The following reinstatements were made: —A. L. Mason, Qkain’s Bay; N. Bradley, Thames; G. J. O’Hara, St Bathans; W. E. Simes, Christchurch, and J. A. Simpson, Gore. The following correspondence was received and dealt with: —Prom the Hardware Amateur Athletic Club, applying for affiliation with the Association. This matter had been considered at the last meeting of the Council, and held over pending the reinstatement of members of the applicant club, and as the matter had been settled, the application was agreed to. Prom Mr P. J. Ness, the local officer at Dunedin, reporting that B. L. Greig had competed for cash in January last. After discussion, it was decided to remove the offender’s name from the list of amateurs. From the New South Wales Association, forwarding programme of Championship Meeting and asking the New Zealand Association to nominate delegates for an' international conference to ho held in Sydney, to consider the advisabloneso of forming an Australasian Athletic Union, reinstatement of professionals, renewing the Australian agreement, which would soon terminate, the definition of amateur, and the proposed Australasian team for England. Mr L. A. Cuff, who is at present in Sydney, wrote, offering his services, which were accepted with thanks. Mr P. Selig was elected as his associate. In connection with the international conference Mr C. F. Smith suggested that it would be expedient to give the A-ssociation’s delegates definite instructions in the matter of the reinstatement question, as he did not think it would he advantageous for New Zealand amateur athletics if tte rules were too stringent. The Chairman explained that what would take place at the conference would be provisional only ; it would, however, be well to inform the delegates of the Association’s views on this important matter. Letters from the following clubs were received with donations towards the Australian team:—Hardware Amateur Athletic Club, £1 Is ; Ashburton Amateur Athletic Club, £2 2s; Thames Amateur Athletic Club, £2 2s; Wellington Amateur Athletic Club, .£l6 18s 6d: Wanganui Amateur Athletic Club, £5 os. The Dunedin Amateur Athletic Club wrote, inquiring whether, if a member of their club, who was not selected as a representative, successfully competed at the Australasian Championship Meeting, the Association would be prepared to refund the expenses incurred. After discussion it was agreed that the

Association would do so. The Wellington Football Club wrote, requesting permission to hold its annual sports on Oct. 2, and it was decided to grant the requisite permission. In answer to a letter from Messrs Rose and Hawthorne, it was decided that the Association would not employe trainey to accompany the representatives to Sydney. The Chairman reported to tbs meetiug that, much to Iris regret. Creamer would bo unable to represent the colonjr in A ustralia. After discussion, it was. decided to substitute D. Wilson, of Auckland. It was also decided to include P. J. the team provided he,could make arrangements to obtain leave. unanimously elected manager. TheGhairman mentioned that he had received a cable from Sydney informing him that, the races were run there “right handTnajde.” The honorary Secretary reported that about £6O was already in hand towards the expenses of the team. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Selection Committee for the trouble they had taken, and the usual vote to the Chairman concluded the meeting. r The following will compose the Kow Zealand team: —Holder, M’Kean, • Eruera, Rhodes, Hawthorne (manager), Martin, Wilson and Brown, if the last-named can obtain leave. /
