PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTIONS.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —On March 9,1597, the Eev P. E. Monro dropped, dead. At once subscriptions were invited from his many friends towards the comfort of his wife and family. In common with others I subscribed, and, as I am writing under an assumed name, I may add I did so liberally, as a token ot regard for so excellent a man. Can you or anyone else tell us what became of the money collected? It is usual to give some sort of a report under similar circumstances, but complete silence has been the case in this instance. It is a pity it is so, as many will not subscribe in' future should this course became common. I may add that this is not a solitary case. Some two months ago I was inconveniently waited on at my home during the ■ evening fora’ subscription on account of a distressed family. I gave one, but have never heard' a word about what has become of the money collected, although the list shown me contained some good sums.—l am, &c.. Sept. 4, 1897. SUBSCRIBER.
