SELWYN COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held yesterday morning; present—Messrs E. Westenra (chairman), W. Dunlop, G. Rutherford, J. G. Murray, J. Wolf, G. H. M’Haffie, J. Eennie and J. Gough, The pay-sheet, which amounted to .£1213 19s 3d, was passed. REPORTS. The reports of the Eoads Diversion Committee on the Dunsford Valley Road, and on closing a road in the Rakaia district, were adopted. With regard to the Dunsford Valley Eoad, the committee reported that it saw no reason why the control of the road should be taken from the Hals well and given to the Tai Tapu Eoad Board. The report on the New Brighton Plantation Reserve recommended that the reserve should be handed over to the New Brighton Borough Council, provided arrangements as to improvements to he carried out by the latter body were agreed on. The report was adopted. The committee’s report recommended that the proposed exchange of land should be made with the trustees of the Cashmere estate so soon as the survey was completed and the consent of the mortgagees obtained. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters from the Canterbury Tramway Company and Halswell Eoad Board were received. An application from the Courtenay Eoad Board for a grant for repairs to the Bealey Eoad on account of the extra cutting xxp that road had received from traction engine traffic was granted, and .£l5O voted for the purpose. A large number of applications were received for the appointment of ranger in connection with the registration of dogs. After some discussion the offer of Mr Zouch, who tendered to do the work for a commission of 8 per cent, was accepted for the remainder of the year. SLAUGHTER-HOUSES. . The report of the Inspector of Slaughterhouses showed that, on June 30, he found three beasts (two heifers and one cow) at the Addington Saleyards ■with swollen jaws and tumour in udder. One Jersey heifer was slaughtered in the presence of Mr Park, the Government Veterinary Surgeon, who pronounced the animal suffering from tuberculosis. The other two were still under supervision. On July 5, at Preece’s sale, condemned a heifer and had it slaughtered; the throat, lungs, liver and udder were full of tuberculosis. On July 6, had three beasts with broken tumours on their jaws slaughtered ; passed two, and condemned one which was badly diseased. On July 22 found three cows at Addington Yards with tumours under their jaws. Had them slaughtered and found them badly diseased, the whole of the internal organs being affected. Traced the ownership of the animals. July 23 and 24 condemned two more cows, which were suffering from tuberculosis. The majority of the houses were clean, and had recently been lime-washed. The report was adopted. ’ ELLESMERE BRIDGE. Mr E. Dobson was appointed engineer of the Ellesmere Bridge, and the Chairman was instructed to arrange for the preparation of the necessary plans. NOTICE OF MOTION.. Mr G. H. M’Haffie gave notice of motion —“ That this Council, at its next meeting, deal with an application from the Christchurch Tramway Company to lay a lino through the Heathoote, Spreydon and Halswell districts.” CONCLUSION. After disposing of some routine business in connection with water-races and plantations, the meeting terminated.
