CHRISTCHURCH. "Wednesday, July 28. (Before Mr R. Beetham, S.M.) The Prohibitory Clauses. Albert Anderson was charged with having, on July 17, while a prohibited person, purchased whisky from Thomas B. Gaffney. He admitted the offence, but said that he had not been feeling well and had gone in to get a little whisky. Inspector Broham called the defendant’s wife, who said that she had seen her husband. going into the New Zealander Hotel, and she, in company with a constable, had gone in and found him at the bar with a glass of whisky. Her hiisband had had influenza since then, but she'did not think he had it on the morning in question. The defendant was fined 20s and costs.—John Warren ■was charged with having; on-July 16, while a prohibited person, been found in the Al Hotel, and also with having purchased beer from John William Collier. The defendant admitted having been in the hotel, but denied having had any beer. Constable Hobson stated that the defendant had been prohibited on Sept. 9, 1896, and a minute of the order had been served on him on Sept. 11. Constable Fahey stated that in consequence of a complaint from the defendant’s son-in-law he went to the A 1 Hotel on Friday last and found Warren in the bar. Ho was not perfectly sober, Henry Blackmore said that when ho went into the bar he saw the defendant with a glass to his lips. There was some liquor spilt on his whiskers and vest, and witness could smell that it was beer. John William Collier, licensee of the hotel, said that he was in charge of the bar when the defendant was there. ■Warren said he had no money, and asked witness to give him some beer, but witness refused. His Worship treated the two offences as one and fined the defendant 20s and costs.
