ST JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION.

The twelth annual meeting of the St John Ambulance Association was held last evening at the City Council Chambers. The attendance *was not very large, the ’ Mayor of Christchurch presiding. The report stated that the horse ambulance was now stationed at the Rink Stables, and might be engaged on application to Mr W. Hayward on the premises. During the year forty-nine patients had * been conveyed by the horse ambulance and sixteen by litter to the hospital and elsewhere. In eleven cases the service . had not been paid for. The sum of <£2l 17s 9d had been expended by the Association An paying for the men’s time and

horse hire and furnishing hampers. Pees amounting to £27T4s 3d had been received by the Association from the persons benefited who were able to pay. The Lowmoor jacket presented by Dr Hacon had. been placed at the Lyttelton railway station. There were now twenty-four professional nurses on the Society’s register, qualified to serve in accouchement, medical, surgical and mental cases. The Secretary had received letters from persons who had made use of the register, expressing satisfaction, and praising the usefulness of the institution. The number of annual-subscribers was 197, as against 184 the previous year. The thanks of the Association were due to the medical staff for their generous help in the way of gratuitous lectures and instruction to classes, as well as tire equally responsible and critical task of examining. The lecturers were Drs E. W, Anderson, Graham Campbell, G. S. Clayton, G. E. Deamer, W. Diamond, B, M. Moorhouse and A. P. J. Mickle, at Christchurch; Drs C. D. Greenwood, H. Hunter, T. Leahy and J. E, Trevor, at Ashburton; Drs C. B, Sweet and Milne Thomson, at Napier; Dr H. C. Parsons, at Kaiapoi; and Dr H. M. Inglis, at Darfieltl. Examiners—Drs W. E. Hacon, E. Jennings, M. Lomax-Smith and W. Thomas, at Christchurch, Drs C, D. Greenwood, H. Hunter, T, Leahy and J. E. Trevor, at Ashburton; Dr W. I. Spencer, at Napier; and Dr J. A. Murray, at Kaiapoi. The committee took the opportunity of recording its sense of indebtedness to Dr J. H, Murray-Aynsley for his valuable and continuous services as a gratuitous lecturer for the j)ast five years, and its regret that he had left the district. The committee also wished to thank Miss Maude, late matron of the for again instructing the nursing pupils. The lectures for 1897 would commence in May. The work of the branches was as under:—At Darfield 16 men attended lectures and 9 passed in first aid. At Kaiapoi 21 men attended lectures and 11 passed in first aid; 10 men attended nursing lectures and 8 passed. At Ashburton 13 men and 20 women attended first aid lectures, and 6, men and 8 women passed; 29 women attended nursing lectures and 17 passed. At Napier 14 men and 18 women attended first aid lectures, and 7 men and 10 women passed; 14 women attended nursing lectures and 9 passed; 2 women passed for medallion. From Sumner Branch 14 women attended the Christchurch nursing classes and 11 passed. At Southbridge a number of pupils have been instructed, but have not been examined. At Denniston Dr J. Harper Reid has obtained and distributed useful ambulance publications amongst the learners already instructed by him. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts had been .£176 18s 2d and the expenditure £lsl 3s 2d, leaving a credit balance of £25 15s, On the motion of Dr Hacon, votes of thanks were accorded to the lecturers and examiners, to the honorary auditor (Mr A. M. Ollivier) and the honorary treasurer (Captain Garsia). Last year’s committee was re-elected, the members being:—The President and Honorary Secretary of the Canterbury section of the British Medical Association in New Zealand, the -Resident Medical Officer of the Hospital, the Matron of the Hospital, Mrs D. Caro, Mr *J. Connal, Mr T. Gapes, Mr I. Gibbs, Mrs L Gibbs, Mrs Hacon, Mrs Izard, Mrs Churchill Julius, Mr H. J. C. Jekyll, .Mrs Kinsey, Mrs Louisson, Mrs S. Manning, Mrs Milsom p Mrs Nashelski, Miss Pheney, Superintendent E. Smith, Mr H. E. Webb and Mrs H. E. Webb. '• A letter was received from the Mayor of Christchurch, inviting the Association to send a representative to the meeting to be held to-morrow evening, to consider, the question of celebrating the record reign. The Secretary, Mr S. D. Barker, was deputed to attend the meeting. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Chairman.
