ASHLEY COUNTY v. SELWYN „ COUNTY, The annual match between teams representing the above counties, which was postponed from last week, was commenced, yesterday morning at Hagley Park, upon a very fast wicket, and in lovely weather. Selwyn County won the toss and elected to take the field. A good start was made by the Ashley men, and 126 for the loss of four wickets was on the score sheets at the luncheon adjournment. Runs came fairly regularly afterwards, and 206 was the total at the close of the innings. Alason, Helmore and Sale were responsible for most of the runs and played well, the first-named being obliged to retire with an injured finger when well set. Selwyn County, although poorly represented, made a bold bid for victory, principally through some vigorous batting by Saunders and Coe, who both played capitally at a critical time. Blunden’s advent to_ the bowling crease soon ended the innings, however, and the Ashley men won by 57 runs. Scores :
