PICNICS.

. .A meeting of- the Building Trades Picnic Committee was held ou Saturday evening at Hobbs’s Buildings. There was a largo attendance. It was decided to go to tho Kaiapoi Domain by drags leaving Cathedral Square at 9 a.m. onFc-b. 27, and to engage tho Kaiapoi Park for use for the day. The secretary was instructed to procure the tickets by Tuesday, when the next meeting will be hold. The annual picnic of tho Paint and Tarpaulin Departments of the Addington workshops took place on Saturday afternoon at Burwood. One of Lukey s drags mot the party at the workshops. On arrival at tho Burwood Hall a luncheon, prepared by My G. Pearce, was highly appreciated. After dinner a cricket match was played on the hotel lawn. An adjournment was then made to Tho bail, where a programme cf_ fiftyfour items was gone through, including toasts, songs, Ac., Mr Kerr presiding. The principal songs were given by Messrs Frost, Foster, Round, Kerr, Stubberficld and Keene. Mr Ashley contributed two stump speeches. Mr Keene repi’esented the boiler shop and Mr P. Williamson the fitting shop. Mr Williamson also presided at the pianoforte. A. start was made for town shortly after 7 p.m., and the holiday was one of the best outings the company had ever enjoyed. Tho employes of the Ashburton Woollen Factory and their friends held their annual picnic at Alford on Saturday. The party, consisting of about 150, drove out to Alford Station, the.journey, which was a very pleasant one, taking about two hours. Ou arriving at Alford Mr Herring placed the whole of his beautiful garden and grounds at the disposal of the picnickers, supplied them with stable accommodation for their horses, boiling water for their tea and did everything that he could to make their outing a pleasant one. The day was spent in boating, racing and pleasant walks over the estate. After tea, and having given three hearty cheers for Mr and Mrs Herring and family, the party returned home, after spending an exceedingly pleasant day.
