THE CASE OF LOUIS CHEMIS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —As one of the public who has taken some interest in the ease of Louis Chemis, and the petitions for clemency, I tender you my heartfelt thanks for your leader on this shameful subject, although I scarcely agree with you' where you say that “ it is not a case in which the will of the people ought to rule or in which the people’s representatives can claim a deciding voice.” I think the will of the people should always be taken into consideration, and that a majority of the people’s representatives should have tile power to'make new or alter old laws. Everybody Tspbak to about Louis Chemis all agree that he has not had justice meted out to him, and without exception all blame the Government for their dilatory conduct in giving no reply to the petitions -they have received. I, for cne have lost all faith in the Seddon Ministry, and would rather see a new party altogether take their place. I neither want so-called' Liberals nor. Tories to misrule us any longer. Let us have a Radical Government and drop the name of Liberal altogether. If anyone objects to the name of Radical, let us try another name. Suppose we start another association, and call it the Independent Equity Association. Ido not care what name you give it if you can only secure a third party of just men who will endeavour to act with firmness and equity. It is high time we gave up insincerity and canting humbug. —I am, &c., ONE OF THE PUBLIC. [Our correspondent has misunderstood our allusion to the will of the people. This is supreme ; but it should never be exercised in defiance of tho existing law. — Ed. L.T.]
