FIRE AT SPRINGSTON.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Quite recently a seaman was fined for carelessly dropping a match and setting fire to grass on the Port Hills. If this was a criminal offence, should not the owners of traction engines bo also charged with setting fire to grass and burning a few miles of fences, besides rendering people destitute by destroying all their working plant ? That was'our experience on Jan. 28, and I hope you will let us thank through your columns all who assisted us in trying to save our property.—We are, Ac., W. & F. DALE.
