WORK AND WAGES.
[Per Press Association.! WELLINGTON, Jan. 30. The difficulty between the Seamen’s Union and the Wellington Steam Packet Company has been amicably settled by the latter conceding the demands of the Union in respect to wages, overtime and holiday rates. Consequently the application lodged with the Clerk of Awards Ims been withdrawn. The clause as regards Sunday sailing also has been satisfactorily arranged. The Seamen’s Union is now communicating with other companies asking if they are prepared to concede the demands.
A well-attended meeting of representatives of various organisations was held in Inglis’s Buildings, on Saturday, for the purpose of forming a committee to receive Mr Ben Tillett. The organisations represented were; Canterbury Trades and Labour Council, Boilermakers’ Union, Canterbury Carpenters, Socialists’ Church, Progressive Liberal Association, Ballauco Liberal Association, Fabian Society, Women’s Institute and Women’s Political Association. A number of persons who were not representing any organised body but who were anxious to take part in receiving Mr Tillett were present. Officers having been elected, a sub-committee was appointed to make further arrangements and report to the next meeting.
