THE HOLIDAY.

LEITHPIELD. Boxing Day was celebrated at Leithfield by a picnic of the children attending the public school, who were taken by their parents and friends to the Waipara Kecks. About twenty spring drays and traps were laden. The day was beautiful, and during the afternoon races for the children were got off and were well competed for. A Married Women’s Race was won by Mrs Cairns, and a Single Women’s Race for all who had ever attended the Leithfield school by Miss Fanny Graham, An Old Schoolboys’ Race was won by A. M’Lean. A number of the elders of the party took advantage of Mr Taylor’s liberality and went for a row in his large boat. The local cricket club played a match Married v. Single, which was most exciting, as in two days’ play tho singles won by only two runs. In the evening a Leap Tear “ social ” was given by tho young ladies. Mr and Mrs Franks supplied the music, tho refreshments were all that could bo desired, and Miss Nellie Traill made a most efficient M.C. j ' CHEVIOT. On Boxing Day tho Cheviot Athletic Club held its sports in Mr Nicholson’s paddock. The day being fine tho attendance was large. The programme of sports was fully carried out, and proved very interesting. A ball was held in the Town Hall in the evening, under the auspices of the Athletic Club. Dancing was kept up with spirit until midnight.
