TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —As an elector I was present at the Colonists’ Hall on Friday last, and heard the candidates’ views on municipal and charitable aid matters. I was astonished at certain questions asked by Captain M’Lellan and replied to by Mr A. Chalmers, one of the candidates, without a blush of shame on his face, as to his past action in dispensing charitable aid to certain persons by telling them it would be better for them to drown themselves, and in another case that he would give him sufficient rope to hang himself. Now, this I consider cruel and Conservative, Mr Chalmers’ Conservatism he also proves by offering his services as Mayor for nothing when the money has already been voted. There are plenty of his class in the country who would give their services for nothing to be returned as members of Parliament for some selfish motive of their own, not for the benefit of the country. —I am, &c.,
