THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir. —To the surprise of many persons Mr W. H. Cooper has seen fit to offer his services for another term of office as mayor. Bearing in mind the very strong remarks made by him of a former mayor who stood for a second term —that his doing so deprived other councillors from occupying the position, and on these grounds he contested the seat against MiGapes, and he then pledged himself not to seek re-election if another councillor desired the position—l think his opposition to Mr J. T. .Smith comes with exceeding bad taste. In Mr J. T. Smith we have a gentleman of well-known business ability, who has filled the position of councillor for a number of years with credit to himself and to the benefit of the city, and who I think is fairly entitled to the position of mayor, and I trust that the ratepayers will show their appreciation of his past services by placing him at the head of the poll on Wednesday.—l am, &c., -'-FAIR PLAY.
